The problem with new Google app logos
COVID-19 has created an upsurge in the way we look at workspaces today. Within a span of a year, many companies have contributed to employee welfare by chalking up some of the best strategies to help people cope with the new normal. The way we work now — communication has become the key factor in upholding, managing, and leading a good team to success.
Communication is primarily in the form of virtual communication due to the shifts away from offices and the rise of work from home policies. Another big player announced a redesign of the app icons and a new promise — Google Meet. This is a part of Google’s strategy of making Gmail an integrated workspace. Meanwhile, Google kept offering premium options for free to customers, added competitive features, and made the lives of many students easy when it came to e-learning, distance learning, and/or virtual classrooms.
The announcement in October 2020 was not just about the rebranding of Google app icons but, a complete modernization of the company’s productivity offerings.
What took the social media for a spin though were the logos Google launched. The designers went crazy voicing their opinions on how bad these logos are and what harm these can do.
In addition, some went on to create memes.
Some of them though were quite helpful in pointing out possible visual strategies that could have been applied to avoid the confusion.
We ran a quick in-house discussion and saw some interesting opinions crop up. The majority of the group felt dizzy looking at the logos, whereas some did not mind the colors as long as they could recognize the forms well.
Some of the obvious observations we saw crop up were -
- Color and shape are the first things users seem to notice when looking for an icon
- A cohesive color palette makes it difficult to differentiate among the icons when placed together. Though we will see it that way quite rarely.
